Notes about Creation as a Process

The desire to understand the process of creation (the methods of its provocation and organization, the nature of its passing, its ruling mechanisms, etc.) exists during the whole lifetime of a human being. A person is not just a witness, but also an active participant in Earthly life. That is why he/she asks questions that are organically part of the surrounding world.

The creative aspects are still the main and unrevealed secret of consciousness and sub-consciousness. Evidently, it is true that we have numerous answers and each of them has a right to be right. There are a lot of different practices in the attempt to perceive this theme. It is important that these approaches are in schools of philosophy or theological-esoteric debates, as well as in science, the world of art, and even in everyday social life.

            Nowadays, the dialogue among businessmen, scientists, and artists becomes more and more intense. They try to find the best way for the development of the personality, the individual and group creative potential, for organization of long-term training for personal improvement, and for finding new possibilities for creative realization in work and in social life in general.

            The author of this article has been an active participant, manager, and moderator of many creative training projects for Ukrainian and foreign art-school students. Naturally, there is a big interest, for one who manages the actor’s training processes, about the first principle that activates creative thought, and about the dialog between logic and intuition, and about the provocation of spontaneously-creative penetration to the main content and the possibility of immediate correction of the material’s realization.

            So, the idea to found and test in Les Kurbas’ Centre my own special actor’s work method, which has conditionally been named, “The Creation Territory: The Method of Creative Improvisation,” was born. OR “The Method of Realization of the Territory of Creative Improvisation,” was born.

The author regards creation as an interaction (not a result of interaction, but interaction itself). Creation is not as simple as it seems to be at the first glance. It can happen only when we have changed consciousness, which is called Inspiration. Such condition is an active work of the human spirit, where the vibration of individual characteristics of a person provokes the subtle idea’s world to interact. The ability to engender inspiration attests to the creative person. Creation means interaction between Man on one side and Universe on another.

A person transforms information from one dimension to another in the process of creative interaction. The idea, like an oeuvre or egg, is information, so creation is a process of conscious effort of the will, and as a result, idea materialization in the oeuvre or egg. There are a few classical definitions of the meaning “creative process”:

Creation is an exit from the subjective and objective conditions of struggle, from the misunderstanding of one’s own life-line. Creation is a connection with the Universe (even just for a moment) which depends on the level of individual consciousness and spirit. Creation is a possibility to join what we call transcendental, God.

            Individual consciousness changes after it has touched the supernatural and has a possibility to see truth without subjective-objective dilemmas. Here there is no question –at the answer level, knowledge is nonverbal. 

             According to Christian orthodoxy about the continuation of creation, God’s creation is ceaseless. He not only built the world, he also holds it in being. A person takes the creative potential and recreates it into actuality with the help of the formative act of spirit. 

             Creation is a condition of an artist’s consciousness when spirit approaches the material, physical level of thought, the result of the creative process (art-work). It is the  reflection of the supernatural in the natural world. 

            Humans and the Universe have a creative dialog in which they complement each other and as a result give birth to a new reality – aesthetic actuality and/or the oeuvre or egg. It is the interaction between material and subtle worlds, visible and invisible, known and unknown.

            Human thoughts are not just a form, they are first of all energy. Every thought is real, it is material. So, when we think, we make an action in the Universe.

Interaction with the Universe can start from the provocative emitting of an idea (information) by person or from perception of an idea that the Universe sends to a person. Each idea finds a channel and a person that will exactly embody it. So, creation is a constant process without beginning or end, like the Universe, like life. Every moment, a person tries to find some form of interaction with the world. Even when a person sleeps or is in some “border condition” (coma, shock, drunkenness, delirium), the brain practically does not stop working, and gives in such moments a phenomenal space for sub-consciousness.

We can assume the following: what you are evokes things that you can hear, feel, and create. And, vice-versa, you are what you are because your creations create you. Constant co-transformation induces the development of an individual.

Our creations come through an incomprehensible transformation from nothingness to sense, from unconsciousness to consciousness. It can happen through actualization. So, the object of creation becomes more actualized for the author; more precisely, the beginning becomes actual, something sensible and concrete on the level of idea. We can call this an “object” that through the actuality of being provokes the interaction in the consciousness of the individual. Provocation springs up in the form of the question – what is it?

The question’s formulation demands an answer. The individual tries to find an answer and starts the creation process through the understanding of the question’s sense.

Real creation always comes through play. You play when you are writing, drawing, sculpting, composing music, etc. The person comes into the play process like a “boat” and goes out in the same way – easy and unconstrained. Every change-over is practically insensible for the person (play is an organic ability of the person-Universe interaction). In such a way the cognition goes on (what is inside?) and the analysis (how does it look like outside?).

A person needs to create a certain coordinate system, some territory in the space of his\her being. Theatre is such a territory. The territory of play is the most striking embodiment of this nature. Theatre reflects this nature in the best way.

We often mean interaction or influence when we talk about the role that some questions, facts, knowledge, skills play in our life. But we indeed talk about play. William Shakespeare wrote that we all are actors and all the world is a theatre. Truly, we are playing with everything we deal with.

People usually feel upset because of the thought that life is just a play. When we hear the word “play” we often think about something false and artificial. Maybe there is some sense in it. If we try to analyze what and how we are doing in our every day life, we will see some compulsion, conventionality, and behavioral rules. The society that we created proposes to us new role rules to play with each other in business and private life. Someone plays the boss’ role, others start to play subordinates, the same with male and female roles, parents – children, president – nation, person and God…

Let’s concentrate on play and the inner fulfillment of this question. I propose to you an improvisational dialog about PLAY. In this case it’s an attempt to communicate with the informational field of the Universe. And ACTION!

– May I consider everything that is going on with me as a play?

– Yes, like a PLAY of the Universe. You play life because life is a play.

– But why exactly the play and is it just the play?

– OK, let’s find out. What is play?

– It’s an action with rules.

– Not always. Let’s consider how a cat plays with a mouse. Do you see some rules? Or a child plays with toys but in one moment breaks it. Are there any rules?

– But what about the motivation that provokes play?

– The main motivation – to amuse oneself.

– Stop, you use the word “amuse.” Is amusement play?

– We can say that amusement is play but not every play can be amusing. Amusement is more close to entertainment. Entertainment is a pleasant interaction of someone with something for pleasure, interesting time spent, but at the same time it’s play. However, there is one important nuance – Cognition.

– You mean that Play is Cognition?

– Play can be cognition.

– I don’t understand “is” or “isn’t”.

– It’s a question for you.

– What do you mean?

– First of all let’s look at Play as an action that provokes us for Interaction.

– I’ve understood. Play is an interaction!

– What is the result of interaction?

– Achieving the aim, opening something new.

– Creation of something necessary, concrete. So, in play we are creating, opening, cognizing.

– Yes.

– Maybe we can go further and say that Play is a process which through the interaction between participants leads to a new reality?

– It means Creation.

– Indeed!

– Yes. Play is an interaction between partners. Your partner could be everything: person, thing, definition, phenomenon etc.

– Even an Idea?

– Of course. We keep contact with the idea of creation during the creation process. An idea like the Pole star helps to find a way for pioneers. Who can orientate in the space and choose the right trajectory to move? The same situation is with creation. Idea lights the reality and opens perspectives. Everything that surrounds us is a result of our interaction with space, time, and ideas. These ideas are bigger and deeper that we think in the beginning.

– So, do you mean interaction with the Universe?

– The Universe is our first and main partner in this life. We are always in interaction with it, even when we think that we interact with a concrete partner. Interaction with a partner is an interaction with the Universe too.

– Is it something like the pyramid? The proverb says, “We are all in God’s view.”

– We also create this God. Interaction, except creation, changes partners. They transform depending on the sense of creation. They can progress and regress.

– I understand. But it means that Play is not initial.

– Yes. There is an Aim before the Play.

– And Aim chooses means, isn’t it?

– We choose means, we are partners and when we make a choice we show our LEVEL OF CONSCIOUSNESS This Level of Consciousness interacts with the Universe. And the Universe opens for us access to information, to knowledge. It shows us how and with what we can cooperate.

– So, my knowledge is not the main thing in the process of Interaction?

– I would make it more precise, that under knowledge we mean new information and discoveries that we are getting in the Process of Creation.

– What is the difference between Creation and Interaction? Does something new appear in Interaction?

– Creation is a process in which something new is being born. An interaction can not always be a creation. For example, partners have agreed about the situation, or something already known, some rubber stamp or cliché, is used.

– So, during interaction we create nothing new if we use already tested decisions.

– Only in the moment of making the choice to use such known stamps. But often we create the new and the unknown in interaction with the old.

– I don’t understand. In result of what and how?

– With the help of intuition.

– What is intuition? How do you think?

– Feeing, insight, hearing, sensation… In other words – the possibility to perceive information beyond a logical format. Intuition is often called ENLIGHTENMENT. It’s a short impulse with concrete information necessary for oeuvre creation. Intuition is also a process that guides consciousness to information about oeuvre – the egg. That’s why, things that we perceive with the help of intuition, we feel earlier then we comprehend them.

– Could we say now that intuition is a guide for all processes of interaction in creation?

– Good, “a guide”! Intuition also conducts one more process – IMPROVIZATION. Creation without improvisation is impossible.

– Improvisation?

– Yes, improvisation is an amusement of intuition. It’s a feast of play and dance of oeuvre. Improvisation is a carnival where you can try something new as well as repeat well-known things looking for content and body of oeuvre. Improvisation is the living essence of any play. The process of intuitive cognition goes through improvisation. But, if we want to continue this process, we need to refuse a prejudiced view on this process. In other words, refuse ESTIMATION.

– Is it possible to create without estimation?

– Estimation stops any improvisation and drives the creation process to stamp/cliché dependence and use of stereotypes, known systems and methods that can give birth only to ORDINARY and EXPECTED things.

– How we can get rid of estimation?

– Change the point of view on the process. Refuse any estimation. Analyze after. Estimation stops things. The nature of estimation has a big reflection on the author’s EGO. It doesn’t matter if it is good or bad estimation, EGO has the same reaction – it withdraws into itself, becomes deaf and blind to the essence of creation. Analysis, oppositely, scans the process, explores experience, looks for analogues of perspectives in cooperation, and so for interaction. Analysis is a creative process, estimation – is not

– But mostly all oeuvres are shown to the audience for estimation.

– Fortunately, among them real REVELATIONS exist that have no price.

In the beginning was the Word. Logically the thought was before the word. So, something here is not correct. What is the thought? The word is a beginning for those who didn’t think about the process of their own intellection. Mostly people are thinking with the help of words from inner space. It’s a result of adaptation to life. When you are told – “Think!” you start to create a word with the help of thought.

So, you go before the process, you don’t catch a clean crystal thought. You choose cliché words, which are the most understandable for you and seem to correspond to the idea’s essence. But there is no contact with thoughts by themselves. More and more inner words estrange you from thoughts’ essence, from impulse, the flash of pure information in your conscious. How could it be?

To understand the mechanism of this process, paying attention to the words that we are saying is not enough. Words seem to be pronounced by themselves, it looks like there is some incomprehensible parallel process. One word changes another like a kaleidoscope. Very often the sense of what was pronounced is far away. There is a communication problem here between individuals. We not only don’t hear each other but also do not understand what was pronounced. Sometimes it’s very hard for sense to go through the words’ noise…

Words that we use everyday have few levels.

The first level is word in thought – ideas, concepts, or organized information energy in some form.

The second level is the word pronounced – articulation, and form of the sound.

The third level is the written word – sign, hieroglyph, or form of calligraphy.

The most delicate form, from those three, is word in the thought level.

What was before word in the thought level?

Here we deal with the most difficult area of word studies, the area of how the words are born. The process of words’ appearing needs a special m e d i t a t i o n a l approach.

Obviously, some “territory” exists where the unformed information stream appears on the screen of a person’s consciousness. And it interacts with accumulated experience (logic) and knowledge and initiates the birth of essence in a word form.

Chaos and Form are meeting in this process.

An idea is an essence’s potential of free information, in other words Chaos, and content is an essence’s potential of form, its concept perspective of perception. Their meeting is a beginning of an icon of word in thought. And the person causes their meeting.

When a person illuminates some concept in his/her consciousness, it’s already a process of speech. First, a person forms an icon, word in thoughts, which then interacts with another word and builds the concrete concept. According to theme and aim the content is projected to the opposite perspective:

a) Initial cause, conception;

b) Intention, task.

As a result of interaction of these two perspectives the impulse of the pronounced word appears. So, a new sound form is created.

Speech is the next step of interaction between word in thoughts and the pronounced word.

In such a way the pronounced word has its own nature that manifest itself in sound. Any word that has been born is a sound combination. The author proposes a short excursus to the physical nature of pronounced word in linguistic meaning:

Sound and phoneme. Language uses a lot of physical sounds. You can easily check this by pronouncing simple words “Yes” in different ways – with a smile, through the teeth, slowly, quickly, squeakily, bass, etc.

But we always apprehend this word as it is despite how it sounds. We distinguish all sounds in this word y-e-s. It’s very difficult to mix up this word with other words like: less, gas, mass, pass.

So, numerous physical sounds that we hear from different people, we bring together to some small number of sound types that we recognize these sound combinations as words and sentences? And then the meaning of what was said. There are 38 such sound types or phonemes in the Ukrainian language. And all words and sentences are formed from them.

Sound type is the main phonology unit. Or, the phoneme is the shortest undivided part in a language stream. Phonemes help to create, recognize and identify morphemes, words and sentences.

Let’s go back to the gist of the matter – the birth of the created word.

Any kind of creation is a transformation of the holographic nature of Chaos to the linear nature.

People are like prisms. Light changes the hologram of Chaos to the linear structures. Why does this happen? Because we live in the word of linear time and space.

For our physical “I” it is comfortable and usual to exist in such dimension. We are doomed for this till our consciousness holds onto these coordinates. Stereotypes have a very strong power above the imagination and thinking process. However, we have the feeling that another dimension exists, where everything is going at the same time and in unique space, in other words Here and Now. Numerous evidences resound more and more often, not only from researchers of art or esoteric spaces but also from scientists and philosophers. We need, at least, to understand our own necessity to get free from stereotypes. It’s not enough to just find methods.

A person’s feeling of the reality of the contact with Chaos space projects a concrete perspective for interaction with Chaos, and creates the point in consciousness where two spaces are crossing. This can be defined as Consciousness Level. We understand that exactly this point helps not only creators but also others to peer into God’s space. That why we try so much to break through to the new Consciousness Levels.

We exist in the “all penetrating current” of certain information chaos. Uncalculated essential things exist in timeless space. A person is the unique creature that could transfer essence from God’s space to the human world, human concepts. This process is CREATION.
